(W.J. BRODERIP & G.B. Sowerby 1829) - Common name Pacific Crown Conch or Burro - Size range 75mm-250mm - Range: Sea of Cortez to Peru
Collected live by local panga boat hooka divers near Desemboque, Mexico. 7-10 meters depth. Tides range 5 meters / 17 feet near Puerto Libertad, so the divers usually go out during low tides to collect murex and other species for meat.
This shell is not cleaned, the snail was removed by the local Mexican fisherman, for once I am shocked, as there is little to no damage. There appears to be no fractures. Very small chip at siphon. Some small peeling of the peristracum. Not too bad.
I will also be offering cleaned specimens. Those are on another page.
This is a very nice specimen, very hard to get. Especially this size and in this good condition.
The snail was removed by the local Mexican fishermen for the meat, for once I am shocked, as there is little to no damage by them. Due to the very warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, these murex come completely covered in heavy build up. Shells this size and age are deteriorated naturally. I've never seen any better. Nothing can be done about the deterioration. I clean all my shells the same. So any defects and color variations are natural as seen in the photos.
